Pottstown interior decorator wins three international design awards

Easton, Md. ---Barbara McInnis Hayman, owner of Decorating Den Interiors serving the Pottstown and surrounding areas  (www.barbara.decoratingden.com), received three design awards in her company’s international design contest for outstanding interior design work.  The awards were presented at Decorating Den Interiors 48th annual conference held recently in St. Louis.

McInnis- Hayman was presented with People’s Choice Awards for two room designs that were judged first and second overall in an online voting competition that drew 20,000 votes for nearly 300 rooms in 11 categories. Her winning rooms were both in the miscellaneous category.

The first place winner featured a jaw-dropping temperature-controlled wine cellarium with adjoining entertaining area for wine tastings and watching sports. A stunning wallpaper in multiple shades of blues, greys and specks of sparkly gold provided the focal point of the space.  The look of exquisite marble in the wallpaper inspired the rest of the room which features pops of blues and other jeweled tones.

Her second-place in miscellaneous was a gorgeous den/man-cave, inspired by the owner’s desire to step outside of his comfort zone. We paired a bold navy sofa and a beautiful Bamboo silk strand rug with lustrous waves of denim, beige, ivory, navy and grey as the focal point of the room. The accessories that we provided satisfied his need for a botanical touch. A neutral, soft geometric fabric draped the windows and completed the look.

Her winning makeover also won first place in a category in a separate competition judged by a select panel of interior design journalists from throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The two design competitions were part of Decorating Den Interiors’ 33nd annual International Dream Room awards competition. Winners were selected based on their design excellence, creative problem solving, and overall presentation.

Also a sales award

Hayman also won a Director’s Award for being in the top 35-percent of franchise owners for sales in 2016.

“I’ve returned from conference with an extensive library of before and after high resolution digital photographs featuring room makeovers from our company’s latest book, Love Your Home, which was introduced at conference,” Hayman said. “It has fabulous designs and the stories behind them, and it makes for an ideal workshop or seminar program for organizations looking for a speaker for their meetings,” she added.

Beyond the sumptuous living room with upholstered furniture , accessory, the 650 square-foot studio has a room filled with hundreds of fabric samples, window products, rug samples and embellishments.

McInnis-Hayman  provided interior design help to her family and friends long before she opened her franchise into 2011, and moved her business from her home to her new studio in May.

"Whether your goal is a Repurposed room or a whole new interior environment for your entire house, we come to you, and your home or office or even your garden, to show you attractive, affordable designs,"said McInnis-Hayman.

The studio is in a home -design stretch along Route 724 in Chester County that has developed by intention or happenstance. Decorating Den is between a carpet and granite store. Within a mile or two or a custom closet store and landscaping design business.

Loyal following

McInnis-Hayman has a loyal following, adhering to her tagline: "Making the world more beautiful, one room at a time."

" She came in and figured out my style,"  said Carol Wallace of Pottstown, who became a client about a year ago. She'd do something and then I'd have her do something else. She did lots of things:  curtains, drapes, furniture,"  said Wallace, who is taking the one-room-at-a-time approach with McInnis Hayman's services. "I love everything in my home that Barbara has designed."

Born in Jamaica

McInnis-Hayman was born in Jamaica and moved to the US to further her education. She earned a degree in Communication from Villanova University and then worked in the pharmaceutical industry, all the while dreaming about a full-time career in design.

She thinks and reads about interior design and never tires of watching HGTV and going to home sales and house tours.  She received professional design school training from Decorating Den, which has been in business for 40 years. Her Communications  background has helped her with the key to her success: listening to her clients.

" Your home or office shoud express  your tastes and support your lifestyle, and the whole process should be easy and enjoyable,"  said McInnis – Hayman. "My initial consultation is complementary, and because I work with a wide variety of suppliers and products, I can help you determine a budget and price range that is comfortable for you. "

"Once we have established your budget, you can relax and know that everything I present to you will fit within the budget we discussed for your project. "

Client Carol Doering, who lives at the Villas at Linfield  in Limerick Township, especially likes the way Mcinnis-Hayman incorporates the things she already owns and loves into a room.

Design Work

McInnis-Hayman has done interior design work on three houses for Doering, who was one of her first clients.

" Barbara is a delight to work with," said Doering." I have an old brass bed that had rungs falling out. She found a man to repair and polish it. The bed is functional and restored to its original beauty, " she said . "She's  not pushy," Doering  said. "She just kind of guides you. She pulled his things together beautifully. "

In a different room at Doering's previous home in East Coventry Township, McInnis-Hayman used a treasured collection of plates as a focal point, working the whole room design around them.

"It was stunning," said Doering, who said she can't get enough of what Decorating Den has to offer. At the May 5 grand opening of the studio, she bought cushion because she loved the fabrics.

McInnis-Hayman specializes in a wide range of design styles, including traditional, contemporary and eclectic. She is an expert in space planning, lighting, furniture and all other elements of good design.

"I love my job," said McInnis-Hayman. "There's nothing more gratifying than seeing the happiness on my clients' faces when they see my work."
