2020 Design Awards

It was no surprise to learn that the 51st Decorating Den Interiors Annual Conference was held as a Zoom presentation but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the honor of winning awards at this year’s Dream Room Contest.

This annual favorite gives interior designers an opportunity to submit their professionally photographed projects. Each project is judged by a panel of shelter magazine editors from publications such as Elle Decor, Traditional Home, Veranda, and several more.

Barbara Hayman is proud to announce that three of her projects have been awarded top honors at this year’s contest.

Home Office Interior Designer

1st Place Winner: Home Office

The existing office was completely gutted to make room for the new transitional home office. The new porcelain taupe-gray floor was installed to mimic the look and texture of wood throughout the space. The clients wanted a desk that could accommodate two people and we custom designed wall to wall built-in storage unit with a custom built-in desk integrated. The desk was installed and attached to the light gray- colored built-ins and custom upholstered in a sleek, textured, dark gray faux leather fabric. To facilitate ease in use of the desktop, a custom glass top was fitted. It was also important that there were no wires visible so we cleverly designed the cabinetry to mask the wires which were then inserted into the desk from below via a custom cut out in the desk surface.

We also custom-designed a mural depicting the map of the entire world in blue and gray hues to fit an accent wall. Gray paint covered the rest of the walls in the room while a deep blue and white geometric rug grounds the space. For privacy and light control, we used a medium gray, textured fabric Roman shade. Stunning contemporary art in beautiful blues added interest and gorgeous color to space. To further satisfy her need for color, we reupholstered her round-backed desk chair in a feminine blue and white fabric and added pops of red accents throughout. A deep red velvet upholstered swivel chair also provides additional seating or a place to relax when they aren’t working.

Living Room Interior Designer

1st Place Winner: Living Room

Inspiration for the room came from the existing baby grand piano with its sleek shiny black finish. A stunning matte black wallpaper embossed with glossy damask was used as an accent wall and as a backdrop for the rest of the stunning makeover. The existing curved sofa was reupholstered in a luxurious, velvety, off white performance fabric and accented with black velvety welt for a striking new facelift and a luxe feel. The sofa is flanked by hand-forged iron tables in gold leaf, topped with clear beveled glass and exquisite lamps accented by champagne crystals.

New upholstered winged chairs and benches in off white fabric as well as a custom, tufted ottoman upholstered in a soft creamy hue provide adequate seating. Gorgeous custom drapery panels in a golden faux silk quatrefoil fabric and paired with gold and crystal drapery hardware, soften the room and add brilliance and rich color to the space. To add lighting to the room, we installed a brilliant chandelier with a silken champagne shade and dripping with golden crystals; while a bold, plush contemporary rug in deep black, ivory, and tan draws the eyes into the large room. Gold and crystal accents, as well as lavish art pieces, add to the look of welcoming opulence.
